Dear Chris Brogan

Quickly tonight, a simple question for the New Marketing Labs Grand Pooba and Trust Agent Chris Brogan:

Why should I buy into your Third Tribe paid forum when you don’t even take time to be social on your own blog; your home that bares your given name? As part of the “baby jesus” clan, you should practice what you preach no?

You admit your failure as a social media expert when you say: (see post here)

Now, given that 45,000 people get this blog sent to them daily, and that another 170,000 people swing by the site at least once every month, and given that I’m good for usually 20 or so comments a post…

You basically begged the lurkers to post comments in this post recently, and you got 750+ comments which is great considering your average is less than 20. But you did not take the time to even respond to one comment that I could see!

Wouldn’t this have been one of those rare moments when your social side could have been used to really pull in the loyalty of these lurkers who took time to heed your call and comment?

But you were too busy with other things I guess. Too busy to be social. Being social is just about you and your wants isn’t it?

This is the impression you have been giving off for quite some time dude.

Sorry, no Third Tribe for me, not from what I see. Chris Brogan = FAIL!

To my regular readers, this is a DO Follow blog and interaction is encouraged. Pretty simple: this blog is for you and about you and designed to help you! (just no more beer and f-bombs LOL)  :)

Dang no more Beer! I grabbed one as soon as I saw you posted! Lol. It was a Wheat beer which is not my favorite but oh well its beer. But on to the good stuff.

As for the post your right about the fact he passed a huge opportunity to bring in more readers by replying to comments. I don’t see how you don’t replay to comments on your site. I would be pulled in to reply even if I didnt have the time. I would just make time to do it. I don’t know, but I have made the leap into marketing the IM niche which I have been putting off for years now. Its more a blog to explain to the people I know personally on how I make money online. That way I don’t have to repeat myself a thousand times over at every gathering we have. I might even have to break out the HD Cam and make some video posts.

The truth is that it seems that those guys have no sales experience. And they don’t realize that making more loyal customers, brings in more customers through the loyal ones:) Have a good weekend man! Go Saints!

Ha Jason, Saints eh??? Well, I am a Peyton Manning fan, so we will see how it goes.
Anyway, you bring up some good points. First off, wheat beers are just fine, helps your bowels. LOL
I get it too, about doing the IM thing as a way to explain what you do, I have pointed friends here as well. And if you do vids, all the better! IMO

as far as the topic at hand… What’s ironic and even hypocrital to me is that Brogan is the self described social media guy who is only social, it seems, when companies are paying him to be or in the case of Third Tribe, when bloggers are paying him to be social. That flat out smells bad to me.
As far as them needing sales experience, I think they need real world experience in general. I dunno Brogan’s job history, but I suspect he never had a real job, and if he did, it was not in a leadership roll.

Here’s another fun update. The Copyblogger had a post about this and Sonia Simone wrote it (she is another part of Third Tribe though I don’t know her background) the post is here
ANyway, there are 25 comments on the post and Sonia replied only twice. Not really very social if you’re not paid for it I guess.

  3. Jason Z says:

Haha well I just chose them cause they haven’t been before. I am from Texas so you know who I cheer for. I have a buddy that is from Chicago that I served with in the Navy. I miss all the trash talk about each others teams lol.

And you are probably right about him never having a real job. And like you said, you would think if you asked for comments you could at least give a response or two somewhere. I just went and checked it out again, and with over 700 plus comments I didn’t find one from him.

@jason– I would like to see the underdog Saints at least give a good challenge. The beer goes down better if the score is close, LOL
Seriously though, 750 comments is freaking awesome considering his average is 20. Kind of a strange swing really. I am sure there is a post just in that part, but it is late and I gotta hit the pillow. ;)

yeah call me old-fashioned – but surely its 2-way communication thing that happens in the comments? They all do it copyblogger, problogger – I managed to get more response out of Darren on his launch post than there hasd been for months on his blog – just cause I gave another commentator some advice! No wonder they have to keep on posting more fluff – there is never any decent conversation going on in the comments – I mean if you only read Grizz’s osts – not the comments – you’d miss all the good stuff. A rather tasty New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay Cab Merlot tonight …

  7. Brother I think it’s a valid point and it’s interesting to see you back it up with facts, no video? Maybe it’s good to let the facts do the talking.

Brother we must be physcicly linked my latest post talks about the importance of creating a mini forum at the end of each post, having a community is what put your site where it is, other people spread your content, take the time to comment and then promote it all for free, the very least a website owner can do is reply.

I’d be interested to see how many feel the same way, subscribing to this post

    Hi Allyn,
I pretty much reply to each comment on my post, if not all. I’m raking in the comments on some posts. However, what you’ll find is that half are mine.

Now that I’ve got a team of ten regular writers on my site, I also have to remind them that the reputation I want for my blog is that all comments will be replied to. I sent an email out to the the writers this week telling them to own their posts and leverage my audience and build relationships with the readers and not to let my reputation suffer in the matter.

I’m shocked Chris Brogan didn’t leave a single comment on that post where he asked for comments. Lol! Oh well, even the Beatles made the odd faux pas.

Enjoyed this short and sweet post, Allyn.

@Gary– hey man, when the Bucs won it back when Alstot played for them, they were unstoppable! That defense was top notch. But now, not so much. I really did want to see the VIkes go this year. Favre is pretty much right up there with Don Johnson in my man-crush book. Plus, it’s fun to hear the commentators make verbal love to him when he is on the field. ROFL
@lissie — THis really is something I cannot understand; the fact that the “heavies” or the “baby jesus bloggers” as I call them, don’t get social on their sites. There has to be a reason for it, and I don’t buy the David Risley “we’re too busy” line seeing as most of these guys rarely get more than 30 comments anyway…. who knows, maybe they don’t want more comments and free content spread across varied IPs. BTW– Gary Vaynerchuk says Australian wines are great, so you are fortunate! ;)
@infodude– yeah man, you have done an incredible job building a ginormous community around your site in a very short time. Now go “milk” that audience for some money and make me proud! (just kidding!!!!)
@epoxy– hey, let’s talk about you for a minute! Love that epoxy floor site! A REAL WORLD niche with good content! Good on you.
Beer site has been taken down on purpose, long story, but I did a podcast on it about 4 or 5 posts ago.
@Gordie– you have been another that I have enjoyed watching. Your team blog approach is very cool and you’re all good writers. But you GOrdie, you totally look like a guy that I could site down and eat some wings and drink some beer(s) with. You just come across as a good dude.
Anyway, I did notice that you make sure that you get in on the comments, and I actually think that is cool that you, as the site owner, are very active in all the posts even if you didn’t write them. I am watching you man, wishing you success!
And as far as the Beetles, let me tell you man, McCartney can do not WRONG! EVER! ;)

    Allyn,

Thanks for that link, and interesting post, I don’t read Brogans blog anyway so missed that, but 750 comments is good… have to ask though, why only 20 average with huge reader numbers like that?

Surely that is a very crap % considering.

Brogan is a smug looking bloke in all his pics for some reason, it is off putting seeing it, maybe he is just…smug?

Funny none of them commented on any of these post that tell it for what it is, crap. Third tribe = mugs.

Hi Rob– that’s the thing, I can’t figure out why he only gets 20 comments when he has ALL those subs and twitter followers. I have to assume that he does not believe in being social in his own spaces, which if he is consulting businesses and telling them this same philosophy, he’s a friggin idiot! LOL And, yeah, he does have a smug, stoic look to him,,, but a nice goatee trim-job, ;)

  12. Allyn, still very appreciative of a great time at lunch last week. I have some follow up thoughts and ideas for our next conversation on collaboration and engagement. I do hope Brogan engages, especially since he is selling a paid forum nowadays.
But in the grand scheme of things, 20 comments average on a social media blog with 45K subs is just plain strange to me. Maybe people just have a different idea of how social media is supposed to work.

BTW– steve, if you know of a local biz that would like some free Social Media work/networking, lemme know, i am looking to do a case study of a bricks and mortar biz in SM.

Allyn, glad to see you going after the crap for what it is, CRAP!

I followed Chris Brogan for about 2.2 seconds a couple of years ago, but I am not interested in people that give off that feeling that they are too good, or better than you and can’t take the time to reply to even a few comments.

I have noticed Risley replying to more comments since the A-List bashing that went on last month and the month before,so maybe he has changed his mind on that (doubtful).

I will be honest, I am not going to go read those articles on tribal stink poo or whatever it is called, because I just don’t have time tobe concerned with their BS anymore. I have plenty going on with my own sites and I plan to make 2010 my year.

I think one of the main reasons why he only averaged 20 comments a post was really due to the fact that he doesnt ever respond to anything of them. Why would you post a comment if you already know your not going to get a response. This time around he asked people to post and they probably thought they would get a little something. Who knows but I know I never post if I know the person doesn’t respond at all. I just dont see what the point would be to do so other than to get some link juice.

Maybe he should just turn off comments on his blog (like some other well-know bloggers) have if there is no two-way interaction with the readers. Not everyone is on Twitter so does that ’social interaction’ really work?

@Rt– yeah, I was gonna stay out of it too, but I wanted to show that I can have opinions without dropping drunken F-bombs like in the past, LOL
@keith– yeah Risley has gotten more social and good on him! And he is very busy with his Fluff Club too, so if he can take time, others can too. SOrry to disappoint on the f-bombs, maybe I will work one up and let it fly sometime again, but doubtful lol
@jason– you hit it on the head…people stop commenting cuz they never get answered anyway. Now Brogan will say that he does his responding on twitter, but I say that’s just dumb becuase you don’t own that space, someone else does… very dangerous!

  22. Shane says:

Social media types that don’t answer comments really seem to rub you the wrong way, don’t they?

I don’t think I mind that much. Granted, asking for comments and then not answering them is very strange. That makes it seem like it’s all just about the comment count (“mine is bigger than yours”), which is certainly the wrong approach.

But in general, I don’t think a blogger has an obligation to reply to every reply.

  24. Jason Z says:

@Shane- I agree a blogger doesnt have to reply to every one because if you had 750 comments it would just be impossible and maintain your business. It is just that people have questions and want answers. Seeing that your answering several questions gives them hope that theirs might be next, and they get to learn from the other questions as well.

Take care of your people and they will take care of you. Its goes a long way in the real world market and in the online market. Most of my work(day job) comes in from referrals that my current customers brought in.

And for the IM niche itself I would think it would be beneficial due to the fact that you will get more people to give you link love as well :)

@shane, Jason hit it on the head, and I will add that Brogan is a SOCIAL MEDIA guy to boot! that would be like having an oil filter blog yet you don’t change your oil in your own car. see?
@lissie– I tell you what, if I can ever get my inner Tim Ferris working, NZ and Australia are at the top of my list!

  26. Shane says:

Yeah, I agree. Building relationships with your customers is really essential. Though I can also say that it can become very difficult. One of my businesses is practically built on the relationship I have to people in that market, but the volume of e-mail requests I get is becoming very difficult to keep up with… It’s kind of a catch-22. If I keep doing what makes the business successful (taking special care of each and every customer), I maneuver myself into a position where I no longer have a life.

Anyway, I agree that caring matter a lot (as Gary V likes to say). And I didn’t mean to defend the Third Tribe thing. Just wanted to mention that.

I haven’t seen much come back from my articles. I was up to 54 backlinks, sent out like 5 or 6 articles and now I’m at 53? Just curious. I’ve only been at this for about a month now, just curious if it’s normal for links to go up and down.

Anyways, thanks for the good information you do. I’ve got Griz, The Keyword Academy (as soon as I sign back up, it does seem worth the 33 a month I guess), and now you that I’m staying up to date on and trying to learn.

Hi JB– Griz was talking about Class C IP and I believe he meant keeping your own sites off of the same IP addy. You also want your links pointing to you coming off of different IP addys. THis is to enhance the “natural” look of the links. But with 53 links, it will not matter to you at this point. I only get concerned about this when I get up around 1500 or more links.
As far as the links showing up and disappearing, that is because they don’t stay indexed. I have a post coming out today about this very subject. stay tuned!

Interesting challenge to Mr. Brogan It amazes me how these ‘third tribe’ guys hold themselves out as being somehow superior the the rest of the “fools” as one of them recently called me and other “non-tribe” wanderers.

If you have abog, and you choose to run with comments open, as the vast majority do, then I submit you have an obligation to answer all but the most trivial of contents. You are engaging in a social contract, so to speak when you start the blog … it’s kind of like people who start making some money and then sream when their country asks for taxes due …hey it’s easy to legally avoid taxes … just don’t make money.

I really dislike the whole ‘third tribe’ promo and concept … it’s very ‘last century’ elitist and has more than few tones of discrimination/racism involved.

I belong to the tribe of mankind, I don’t consider myself superior to any other man or woman, and I think to do so takes us back to the days when people were proud to be in the KKK, the Third Reich and other exclusionary organizations.

One of the great attractions to the Internet for me is, I interact daily with people from all walks of life, for countries all over the globe and folks of all different age grups and socio-economic layers. I think exclusionary tribes are wrong from their very inception, and I am particularly sad that a man I always considered a friend, Darren Rose, has chosen to align himself so strongly with this movement.

    Sign me ‘the tribes-les one’.

For me, it’s just a matter of the “too big for your britches” syndrome. You might also call it arrogance.
Either way, it’s sad as hell to see!

Begging lurkers to comment and then leaving them out in the cold is pretty poor hom.

I’ll admit though, some blogs have discussion-based commenting, and some have linear BUT the bloggers are reciprocating on each others’ blogs so no actual reply is expected. But I like the threaded commenting and just turned it on on my blog.

Wow! I’m late to this party, but glad I had the opportunity to read this post. I didn’t see any mention of reading Brogan’s book, Trust Agents. I’ve never met Chris Brogan, but I liked the book.
I agree with Karen – if you have too many followers, turn off comments. I rarely comment on an A-Listers blog – I know that chances are most of them will not respond, and if I have something to add, I may as well share it in another forum.

Thanks for the opportunity to give my opinion and thanks for the link love.

  44. Allyn, it’s been a while, but every time I drop in here you make me laugh. Good grief, it’s been a rotten day. I’ve been reading through Griz’s archives and I had to come over and say hi. Keep doing what you do. (as if you wouldn’t)

Personally, I think what’s the point in writing a blog that allows comments if you don’t interact with them.

Either have the comments enabled and respond to them, or just disable the comments if you can’t be bothered.
