In this one, I have to add in some writing to make sure my thoughts are clearly conveyed. I did the vid last night (drinking beer of course), and now, here in the AM, coffee in hand, I am doing to copy to clarify the vid. Ok, enough…watch it…
Keep in mind that I am mostly referring here to video blogs setup as social drivers and not “targeted niche” ones. It is possible to strike a balance between the two, but that is for another post.
So in short, there are basically 3 reasons why people will watch you and visit your video blog site, no matter what your subject:
1) they like your primary subject matter (in the case of Gary Vaynerchuk, Wine)
2) they like the secondary stuff you talk and jaw about (Gary V talks about the Jets)
3) they just think you are cool and they connect with your personality on some level
And, of course, then there is the perfect match in a viewer, and that is the person that likes all three listed above. Either way, you can draw an audience to your video blog fairly easily if you are putting out enough content to let people get to know you. In the case of these types of social sites, any audience is a good audience.
(unlike the micro-niche blogs we have talked about before where we only want targeted, buying traffic)
Can you make money with a social video blog? Yes you can, but you have to realize that it will take a lot more time and energy to build it and also to maintain it. Social video blogging and developing a cult of personality is a very good long term strategy, but it is definitely not a passive income strategy.
So if you are looking at getting in front of the camera, you may want to consider a blog like Gary’s Wine Library or check out this little chick, IJustine who has a completely personality driven video blog that has blowed up bit time.
And of course, here is the commercial for Dos Equis if you have not seen it before. Check out the little shitty boat he uses to troll around the girls.. hilarious.

Hell Ya Dos Equis is the shit. I love those stupid commercials so much I compiled them into a post lol 2drunk.com
I love reading the posts with the video. Ha a little beer influence in your writing. I am guessing you write the post after the video and a few beers. I love it. Great content. I’ll request some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale for the next episode (a little hometown flavor).
therealjosh – Good beer suggestion!
Allyn, I had to comment about The Roots – they are indeed the shit. I’ve seen them live twice and once you experience it, you realize how bad all other rap “artists” (and I use that term loosely) are. They have some serious talent and it’s quite refreshing in a generation with lots of crappy, bubble gum pop music.
@DWEP– dude, great site man 2drunk.com looks like a real winner! I went ahead and Tweeted it out for ya man.
@the real josh — Yeah man, I do actually get a little bombed during the whole mix down of the vid and then into the writing part… makes things more “real” LOL and I will def put in an order for some Sierra Nevada here in the next couple weeks
@Ray — yeah man, the Roots are a very good mix or wrap, hip hop and funk. If it wasn’t for them, Jimmy Fallon would be out of a job for sure.
Great video as usual my friend. I did something different today. I have interacted directly with you at different parts of the video and made a few of my own video comments. Since I also have a Viddler account, I took advantage of this feature.
Wow, SteveS, eery cool feature.
@steve,
yeah, I love those comments embedded in the vid like that. the issue is that I am on my Verizon wireless card right now and it takes too long to download the vid comments, so I will have to watch them later tonight… I am sure they are full or wit and homro, LOL
BTW– to the rest of you, go over and get a free Viddler account and you can comment in the vids like that also.
This is the first time I ever saw those vid inserts.
I thought it was Allyn doing it in the editing to make Steve laugh when he watched the video.
(You know, kind of like all those secret mesages that are supposed to be hidden in Beatles songs if you play them backwards. LOL!!! )
@JL I don’t dare reveal any of Allyn’s secrets. I don’t want the Chicagoland Mafia heading down to Carolina for a little visit.
It’s ok, SteveS, he’s smart enough that someday he’s gonna ditch the snow and head on South with the sane people (said Palmetto as Winter approaches, and the Canada geese fly overhead on their way to warmer climes).
Now what? You’re doing insightful analysis? Seriously, this is great information (and as always, entertaining).
I am a fan of your site. I hope to have the freedom to taste all of your beers in thier home land some day. With Darren, Gary, Courtney, and Griz’s guildness and help.
